The common cockchafer, known colloquially as the maybug, maybeetle or doodlebug among other names, is a species of scarab beetle in the genus Melolontha, native to Europe. It is one of several closely related and similar-looking Melolontha species called cockchafers, alongside Melolontha hippocastani, which shares sexual dimorphism, mating behavior and physical features such as lamellae count but is a historically divergent species from the common cockchafer.
