The coconut palm is a member of the palm family Arecaceae and the only living species of the genus Cocos. The word coconut can refer either to the whole palm tree or to its large hard fruit, and the plant is native to the Central Indo-Pacific, from where it has spread to become common throughout coastal tropical regions worldwide.
