Coenobita brevimanus

Coenobita brevimanus is one of the larger species of land hermit crab, with adults reaching up to about 230 grams, a disproportionately large dark purple pincer, long black eyestalks, brownish red coloring with violet shading on the limbs, and occasionally a pink color form. It is native to the east coast of Africa and the southwest Pacific, with additional reports from East Africa, the Philippines, Japan, China, and Taiwan, and is the most terrestrial species in its genus, living in humid inland environments such as rainforests that need at least eighty percent humidity, sometimes more than 100 meters from shore. Its abdominal lung and greatly reduced gills suit it to life on land, it can live 12 to 70 years, and it is regarded as the largest land hermit crab species kept in captivity.
