Coenobita longitarsis

Coenobita longitarsis is a terrestrial hermit crab distinguished by its remarkably elongated second and third pairs of walking legs, in one specimen longer than its own body, with a shield about 10 to 13 millimeters long and coloring that shifts from reddish purple at the front to reddish yellow at the rear to brownish grey, with greenish or bluish legs tipped in red, orange, or white. It lives in inland forests across the Indo-Pacific, including Maluku in Indonesia, New Britain and Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Guam, ranging up to 10 kilometers from the coast and above 850 meters elevation. Unlike most Coenobita species, which use conical shells, it uniquely occupies flattened disc shaped land snail shells such as those of Discoconcha isis, a shape scientists believe its slender body has adapted to fit.
