Coenobita rubescens

Coenobita rubescens is a small species of terrestrial hermit crab, weighing only about 48 grams, named for the dark red coloring of its exoskeleton, with an elongated antennule and no stridulation ridges on its left claw. It is the only known terrestrial hermit crab species on the Atlantic coast of western Africa, first documented on the islands of Sao Tome and Rolas, and can travel far inland to altitudes above 800 meters. Like other terrestrial hermit crabs its females must release fertilized eggs into the ocean for the larvae to develop, and it has been reported carrying a sea urchin test in place of the usual gastropod shell.
