Common buttonquail

The common buttonquail, also called the Kurrichane buttonquail or Andalusian hemipode, is a small bird in the buttonquail family, a group that resembles but is not closely related to true quails. It is a tiny bird about 15 centimeters long with streaked sandy brown upperparts, buff underparts with black flank markings and a plain face, found from southern Spain and Africa through India and tropical Asia to Indonesia in warm grasslands and scrub jungle. It is notoriously difficult to observe because it runs on the ground and is reluctant to fly, and while it is Least Concern globally it went extinct in Europe as of 2021.
