Common redstart

The common redstart, Phoenicurus phoenicurus, is a small passerine now classified as an Old World flycatcher in the family Muscicapidae, after formerly being placed with the thrushes. It measures 13 to 14.5 centimeters and weighs 11 to 23 grams, and is most easily recognized by its orange red tail, which it frequently quivers. It is a summer visitor across most of Europe and western Asia as far as Lake Baikal, wintering in central Africa and Arabia south of the Sahara but north of the equator, arriving on its breeding grounds in early to mid April and typically laying five or six light blue eggs in May. It is listed as Least Concern, though it has declined locally in places such as England.
