The common scoter is a large sea duck, 43 to 54 centimeters long, that breeds across the far north of Europe and the Palearctic as far east as the Olenyok River and winters along temperate coasts from Europe south to Morocco. Males are entirely black with a bulbous bill showing yellow around the nostrils, while females are brown with pale cheeks. Its conservation status is Least Concern.
