Common sole

The common sole, also called the Dover sole or black sole, is a species of flatfish in the family Soleidae and one of the largest fish in the genus Solea. It lives on the sandy or muddy seabed of the northern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, where it often partially buries itself in the substrate. Its upper side is greyish brown while its underside is white, and it grows to a maximum length of about 70 centimeters. The species is prized as a food fish and is caught mostly by bottom trawling; its common name comes from Dover, the English fishing port that landed the most sole in the 19th century.
