Domestic House Spider

Arachnids

The domestic house spider, Tegenaria domestica, called the barn funnel weaver in North America, is a member of the funnel-web family Agelenidae first described by Carl Alexander Clerck in 1757. It has an elongated body with a flattened front section, colored dark orange to brown or beige, often with striped legs, paired dark stripes on the front body section, and a mottled brown, beige, and gray chevron pattern on the abdomen, with females measuring 7.5 to 11.5 millimeters and males 6 to 9 millimeters, males distinguished by longer legs, larger pedipalps, and a more elongated abdomen. It ranges nearly worldwide, native to Europe, North Africa, parts of the Middle East, and Central Asia, and introduced to the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand, favoring sheltered indoor and outdoor spaces such as attics, basements, and storage areas where it builds funnel-shaped webs.
