Crickets are orthopteran insects, most classified within the superfamily Grylloidea, closely related to bush crickets and, more distantly, to grasshoppers. Older classification schemes placed crickets at the family level, but contemporary authorities now group them within this broader superfamily. The common name is also used more loosely for related taxa in the suborder Ensifera, including king crickets and mole crickets, which represent separate lineages within the same larger insect group.
