Crusty Nautilus

The crusty nautilus, also called the fuzzy nautilus, is a species of nautilus native to the waters around Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, including areas near New Britain and Milne Bay. Its shell is thick, hairy, and slime covered, with white papillae on the hood and a wide open umbilicus, and it typically measures about 18 centimeters across. The species lives at depths of roughly 500 to 1,300 feet and was thought extinct after 1986 until it was rediscovered in July 2015. It is listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN and included in CITES Appendix II.
