Desmarestia viridis

Desmarestia viridis is a species of brown algae in the phylum Ochrophyta, growing up to 48 inches tall with a disk-like holdfast and a cylindrical central axis bearing characteristic opposite, bushy branching. Its brown color comes from the pigment fucoxanthin, which dominates its other photosynthetic pigments. The species is found in nearly every ocean except the Indian Ocean, with particular prevalence around Ireland, Great Britain and the Isle of Man, where it grows attached to hard rock substrates in the subtidal and intertidal zones of both protected and exposed, cool-water coastal habitats.
