The giant cuttlefish, also called the Australian giant cuttlefish, is the world largest cuttlefish species, growing to fifty centimeters in mantle length and up to one meter in total length, with some individuals weighing more than ten and a half kilograms. Native to temperate and subtropical Australian waters from Queensland to Western Australia and south to Tasmania, it lives on rocky reefs, seagrass beds and sand or mud seafloor to depths of about one hundred meters, and uses color-changing chromatophore cells to produce striking displays.
