Sepiida

Sepiida is an order of ten-armed cephalopods commonly known as cuttlefish, placed within the superorder Decapodiformes in the class Cephalopoda. The order was established by John Edward Gray in 1849 and comprises two superfamilies, Sepioidea and Vasseurioidea; today it contains only the living family Sepiidae, exemplified by species such as the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, alongside several extinct families known from fossils reaching back to the Maastrichtian. Bobtail squids were once classified as a suborder of Sepiida but are now placed in their own separate order, Sepiolida, and the precise evolutionary relationship between the two groups remains an open question in current phylogenetic research.
