The domestic pigeon is a domesticated bird descended from the rock dove, of which it is technically a subspecies, though it does not form one accepted zoological subspecies but instead a collection of more than 350 distinct breeds. The rock dove was among the first birds ever domesticated: Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets and Egyptian hieroglyphs both record its domestication more than 5,000 years ago.
