Engelmann spruce, Picea engelmannii, also called mountain spruce or silver spruce, is a species of spruce native to high-elevation mountain forests of western North America, occasionally extending into irrigated canyon habitats at lower elevation. Its close, straight grain and resonant qualities make its wood especially prized by instrument makers for the soundboards of acoustic guitars and other stringed instruments.
