The European bee-eater is a species of bird in the bee-eater family, Meropidae, and has the largest range of any bee-eater species. It breeds across southern and central Europe, northern and southern Africa, and western Asia, and except for a resident population in southern Africa it is strongly migratory, wintering in tropical Africa; it also occurs as a spring overshoot north of its usual range, with occasional breeding recorded in northern Europe.
