Ceratodon purpureus, commonly called fire moss, redshank, purple forkmoss or purple horn toothed moss, is a dioicous moss whose color ranges from yellow-green to red and which reaches about three centimetres in height. It grows worldwide and is especially adept at colonizing disturbed ground, from polluted highway shoulders and mine tailings to land recently burned by wildfire and even sunlit Antarctic slopes.
