Fraser fir, Abies fraseri, is a conifer of the family Pinaceae restricted to a small range of high-elevation peaks in the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Its naturally symmetrical shape, strong branches, pleasant fragrance and good needle retention after cutting have made it one of the most popular Christmas tree species in the United States, grown commercially in large plantations in western North Carolina despite the wild population's own vulnerability to an introduced insect pest, the balsam woolly adelgid.
