Giant sunfish

The giant sunfish, whose scientific name is Mola alexandrini, is a species of ocean sunfish in the family Molidae. It holds the record as the heaviest known bony fish, with a specimen found near the Azores in 2021 weighing 2,744 kilograms and measuring 3.25 meters long. The fish has a small mouth with teeth fused into a parrot like beak, a flattened rounded body, and rough brown and gray skin. It lives in tropical and temperate seas worldwide, favoring water between about 17 and 26 degrees Celsius, and is commonly seen around Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Its diet is mostly jellyfish, supplemented by brittle stars, small fish, plankton, salps and mollusks, with juveniles feeding in coastal waters and larger individuals diving deeper.
