The goldcrest is a very small passerine bird in the kinglet family, notable for the colorful golden crest feathers that give it both its English and scientific names, the latter meaning petty king or prince. Several subspecies are recognized across its broad range through the Palearctic and the islands of Macaronesia and Iceland, and northern and eastern populations migrate south for the winter.
