The greater short-toed lark is a small passerine bird. Its genus name, Calandrella, is a diminutive of kalandros, the Greek name for the calandra lark, and its species name, brachydactyla, comes from the Greek words for short and toe, reflecting its Ancient Greek derived scientific name.
