The hoatzin is a species of tropical bird found in the swamps, riparian forests, and mangroves of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America. It is the only living species in the genus Opisthocomus, itself the only living genus in the family Opisthocomidae under the order Opisthocomiformes, and despite intense debate among specialists the taxonomic position of this family remains unclear.
