The lava cactus, Brachycereus nesioticus, is the sole species of the genus Brachycereus and a colonizer of lava fields, which is the source of its common name. It forms spiny clumps up to 60 centimeters tall with solitary white or yellowish-white flowers that open in the daytime, and it is endemic to the Galapagos Islands.
