Agathis silbae

Conifers and Other Gymnosperms

Agathis silbae is a conifer in the family Araucariaceae endemic to the island of Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu, found only on the Cumberland Peninsula and Mount Tabwemasana between 450 and 760 meters, in wet rainforest receiving about 4,500 millimeters of rain a year. It grows as a large emergent tree rising above the surrounding montane canopy and was described in 1987 by David de Laubenfels, who named it for the botanist John Silba; Vanuatu's forestry department considers it potentially synonymous with Agathis macrophylla. The IUCN Red List classifies it as Near Threatened. This description is adapted from Wikipedia contributors under CC BY-SA 4.0; changes were made. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/

  • Ethnobotany: resin, bark and root tips
Traditionally, the resin has been used for lighting and to caulk canoes, and its soot for tattoos; the bark for medicines; and the root tips for "fattening babies" (Siwatibau et al. 1998 and Wheatley 1992, both cited in Corrigan et al. 2009).
  • Ethnobotany: commercial logging
Santo kauri was commercially logged by a local operator between 1995 and 1997, and the wood is much in demand.
