Agathis

Agathis, commonly known as kauri or dammara, is a genus of large coniferous trees native to Australasia and Southeast Asia, one of only three living genera in the family Araucariaceae alongside Wollemia and Araucaria, to which it is more closely related to the former. Agathis trees are distinguished from most conifers by their unusually broad, flattened leaves rather than typical needles. Several species, especially the New Zealand kauri (Agathis australis), grow to enormous size and great age, and were historically prized both for high-quality timber and for kauri gum, a resin harvested commercially from living trees and from ancient buried deposits. While most species favour humid tropical lowlands, a few extend into cooler temperate climates at higher elevation.
