The blue kauri is a conifer in the family Araucariaceae endemic to the Wet Tropics of northeastern Queensland, Australia, where it survives in small, fragmented populations in high elevation rainforest on granite massifs near Cairns, including Mount Lewis National Park and the Bellenden Ker Range, at 700 to 1,600 meters. It is a large rainforest tree reaching up to 50 meters, identifiable by smooth to flaky bark mottled with dark blue, purple, and near black patches. Queensland classifies it as of least concern, but the IUCN rates it Near Threatened, citing invasive species, a soil pathogen, and climate change as potential concerns even though the population is currently stable.
