Chinstrap Penguin

Birds

The chinstrap penguin is a species of penguin found on the rocky, ice-free coasts of the sub-Antarctic and the Antarctic Peninsula, named for the narrow band of black feathers that runs beneath its head like a strap. It is one of the most abundant penguin species, breeding in enormous colonies, sometimes numbering in the hundreds of thousands, on islands such as the South Sandwich Islands, the South Orkney Islands, and the South Shetland Islands. Adults stand roughly 68 to 76 centimeters tall and feed mainly on krill, small fish, and other crustaceans caught during dives close to shore. Both parents share incubation duties and chick rearing, and the species nests directly on bare rock or in pebble nests rather than on ice.
