Kauri

Conifers and Other Gymnosperms

Kauri, Agathis australis, is a conifer of the family Araucariaceae native to the northern North Island of New Zealand, growing into one of the largest and longest-lived tree species in the world, with individuals capable of living well over a thousand years and reaching massive trunk girths. Extensive nineteenth- and early twentieth-century logging for its valuable timber and for kauri gum, a fossilized resin once used in varnish, greatly reduced the species' original forest cover, and the best-known surviving individual, Tane Mahuta, is a major conservation icon.
