The sawback angelshark, Squatina aculeata, is a species of angelshark in the family Squatinidae, order Squatiniformes. It is light brown mottled with dark brown, with white spots arranged on the head and parts of the body, and is distinguished by large, almost pyramidal denticles with median spines running down its back; females grow to 137 to 143 centimeters and males to 120 to 122 centimeters. It occurs in the eastern Atlantic off Senegal, Gambia and Sierra Leone and in the Mediterranean from Algeria to Turkey, living on sandy and muddy seafloor at depths of 30 to 500 meters. The IUCN Red List classifies it as Critically Endangered, a status it was given in 2007 after decades of overexploitation, with continuing threats from illegal and commercial fishing, heavy metal contamination and coastal habitat disruption.
