The silvery gibbon, scientifically Hylobates moloch, is endemic to the Indonesian island of Java, where it inhabits undisturbed rainforest up to an altitude of 2,450 meters. It has a bluish-grey coat with a dark grey or black cap, weighs about 8 kilograms, and like other gibbons has no external tail, long curved fingers, forelimbs longer than its hind limbs, and mobile wrist joints that let it lock its elbows while suspended. It is diurnal and arboreal, moving through the forest canopy by brachiating and feeding on fruit, leaves and flowers. Females typically give birth to a single offspring every three years after a seven month gestation, nurse young for about 18 months, and young reach maturity around 8 to 10 years old. It has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2008, with a wild population of fewer than 2,500 mature individuals.
