Hylobates

Hylobates is a genus of gibbons and one of four genera in the family Hylobatidae, its name meaning forest walker in Greek. It was once considered the only gibbon genus, with the genera Hoolock, Nomascus and Symphalangus formerly treated as its subgenera before being elevated to full genus status. Hylobates remains the most species-rich and widespread gibbon genus, with nine recognized species ranging from Yunnan province in southern China through Southeast Asia to western and central Java, and its members carry 44 chromosomes and typically show a ring of white fur around the face.
