The Bornean white-bearded gibbon is a small, tailless ape endemic to southern Borneo, living in the region between the Kapuas and Barito rivers. It has grey or dark brown fur, a black face and a white beard, with males weighing 6.1 to 6.9 kilograms and females 5.5 to 6.4 kilograms. It was formerly considered a subspecies of the agile gibbon, but recent DNA research has led some to classify it as a separate species. It has been listed as Endangered by the IUCN as of 2020 and is included in CITES Appendix I, with ongoing logging of tropical forests as its primary threat alongside mining, forest fires linked to El Nino events, and climate change.
