Southern Grey Gibbon

The southern grey gibbon, scientifically Hylobates muelleri, is a primate of the gibbon family endemic to the southeastern part of Kalimantan in Borneo, found roughly south of the Mahakam River and east of the Barito River. Its fur is grey or brown with a ring of bright fur around the face and a darkly colored cap, and unlike most gibbons it shows no sexual dimorphism in coloration. Weighing 4 to 8 kilograms, it is among the smaller gibbon species. It was formerly considered the same species as the western grey gibbon and eastern grey gibbon, but recent studies recognize all three as distinct. It is listed as Endangered under IUCN criteria and included in CITES Appendix I.
