Sumatran striped rabbit

Mammals

The Sumatran striped rabbit, also known as the Sumatra short-eared rabbit, is a species of rabbit found in the montane forests of the Barisan Mountains in northwestern Sumatra and surrounding areas. It is similar in size to the European rabbit but has shorter limbs and muzzle and a broader head, and is distinguished by black or dark brown stripes running across its yellowish grey body. Its close relative, the recently discovered Annamite striped rabbit, has a similar fur pattern but is found only on the Laos-Vietnam border. It eats plants, preferring vegetation in the genus Cyrtandra but also feeding on fallen fruit and plants in the family Araceae, avoids cultivated fruits and grains, and appears from studies to be a solitary, nocturnal animal about which little else is known. It has been described as the rarest rabbit in the world, rarely seen despite extensive camera-trap studies in its habitat, and is threatened by habitat loss.
