The white-vented violetear, Colibri serrirostris, is a monotypic hummingbird of the subfamily Polytminae, measuring 12 to 13 centimeters and weighing 5.6 to 6.8 grams. Males are mostly shining green with a yellowish-green, blue-iridescent rump, a glittering green tail crossed by a wide steel-blue band near its end, pure white undertail coverts, and distinctive violet-blue ear coverts; females are paler and grayer, and the bird's finely serrated upper bill gives it its scientific name. It is found across southern Brazil from Mato Grosso east through Goias, Bahia and Espirito Santo south to Santa Catarina, as well as in Bolivia, central Paraguay and northern Argentina south to Cordoba province, living in semi-open scrubland, savanna, grassland and gardens from sea level to 3,600 meters, most commonly between 1,000 and 1,500 meters.
