Marsh Bryum

Ptychostomum pseudotriquetrum, commonly known as marsh bryum and formerly classified as Bryum pseudotriquetrum, is a moss in the family Bryaceae distinguished by leaves that run decurrently down the stem and by long stems densely matted with rhizoids. It is dioicous, with separate male and female plants, growing yellow green when young before becoming red brown with age, each leaf carrying a stout red brown midrib that extends beyond the tip as a smooth awn. The species has a bipolar distribution and occurs on every continent including Antarctica, growing on rocks and wet soil beside streams and lakes and in fens, wet heaths and marshes at elevations up to four thousand metres, though it is largely absent from the tropics, subtropics and central Pacific islands.
