Metarhizium is a genus of fungi that infects and kills insects in a manner similar to Beauveria bassiana, penetrating the host's cuticle and eventually covering the dead insect in a distinctive green layer of spores, giving the resulting disease its name, green muscardine disease. Various species and strains within the genus are cultivated and applied as biological control agents against agricultural pests and disease-carrying insects, including locusts and mosquitoes.
