Mrigal carp

The mrigal carp, also called the white carp, is a species of ray finned fish in the carp family, native to Indian rivers, though its only surviving wild population is now in the Cauvery River, giving it a vulnerable conservation status. It can reach a maximum length of about 1 meter, and young fish typically reach around 24 inches and 4.4 pounds by age two. The species is one of the three Indian major carps and holds major importance in South Asian freshwater aquaculture, widely farmed in polyculture systems, with annual production fluctuating between roughly 250,000 and 550,000 tonnes since the early 1990s and India and Bangladesh as the leading producers; it commands a premium price compared with other farmed carp.
