Nautilus vanuatuensis

Nautilus vanuatuensis is a species of nautilus formally described in 2023 that is endemic to the waters around Vanuatu in the South Pacific, the only nautilus species known from that island group. Its shell is unusually heavily pigmented, with red coloring covering 40 to 50 percent of the surface in stripes running from the outer edge of the shell toward the center, more than other nautilus species with a plugged umbilicus. It occupies deep water between 200 and 400 meters but is also found as shallow as 5 meters, and the IUCN classifies it as Vulnerable.
