Nautilus vitiensis

Nautilus vitiensis is a species of nautilus native to the waters of Fiji, formally described in 2023 as one of three newly identified nautilus species from island groups separated by at least 200 kilometers of deep ocean. Its shell shows comparatively light pigmentation, covering only 15 to 30 percent of the surface, and measures 137 to 165 millimeters, smaller than most other nautilus species. It has been collected off Viti Levu, near Suva Harbour and Pacific Harbour, at depths of 200 to 400 meters, notably deeper than the roughly 800 meters at which other nautilus shells are known to implode, and it is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
