Nelumbo nucifera, known as the sacred lotus, Indian lotus or simply the lotus, is an aquatic flowering plant and one of only two living species in the family Nelumbonaceae. It is often confused with true water lilies, which belong to the unrelated family Nymphaeaceae, and it is classified within the order Proteales rather than alongside them.
