The New Britain sparrowhawk is a threatened species of bird of prey endemic to two Papua New Guinea islands, New Britain and New Ireland. In 1934 the ornithologist Ernst Mayr, surveying mountain bird life during the Whitney South Sea Expedition, already found the species to be very rare. It was formerly placed in the genus Accipiter.
