The Nile perch, also known by many local and trade names including African snook and Victoria perch, is a large freshwater fish native to the Congo, Nile, Senegal and Niger river basins, Lake Chad, the Volta system and Lake Turkana, and it also occurs in the brackish waters of Egypt's Lake Maryut. Though not native to Lake Victoria, it has been introduced there and is a fish of major economic and food-security importance across East Africa.
