Picea abies, the Norway spruce or European spruce, is a species of spruce native to Northern, Central and Eastern Europe, with branchlets that typically hang downward and the longest cones of any spruce, 9 to 17 centimetres long. It is closely related to and hybridizes freely with the Siberian spruce, which replaces it east of the Ural Mountains, and it is widely planted for timber and as the Christmas tree of choice in several countries; it was also the first gymnosperm species to have its genome sequenced.
