The paper nautilus, Argonauta argo, is a species of pelagic octopus. Only the female argonaut secretes the thin, coiled, papery shell for which the species is named, using it not as a permanent body case like a true nautilus but as a floating brood chamber to protect her eggs, while the much smaller male produces no shell at all.
