Pheasant-tailed jacana

The pheasant-tailed jacana is a wading bird and the only species in the monotypic genus Hydrophasianus. Like other jacanas it has elongated toes and claws that let it walk across floating vegetation on shallow lakes, its preferred habitat, and it also swims or wades while foraging mainly for invertebrate prey. It is found across tropical Asia from Yemen in the west to the Philippines in the east and moves seasonally within parts of its range. It is the only jacana that migrates long distances and the only one with distinct breeding and non-breeding plumages. Females are larger than males and polyandrous, laying several clutches that are each raised by a different male in her harem.
