The piggyback araucaria, also called the biramule araucaria, is a medium to large conifer in the family Araucariaceae endemic to Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia, where it grows up to 30 meters tall. Mature trees often develop a second growth tip partway up the trunk, giving the appearance of a smaller tree piggybacking on the larger one, which is the source of its common name. The IUCN Red List classifies it as Vulnerable, with fewer than 10,000 mature trees remaining and ongoing decline from forest fires, mining activity, and broader habitat loss.
