Pneumocystis jirovecii is a species of fungus that causes pneumocystis pneumonia, a serious lung infection that occurs almost exclusively in people with a weakened immune system, such as those with advanced HIV infection. Long classified as a protozoan because it does not respond to standard antifungal drugs the way most fungi do, it was reclassified as a fungus based on genetic evidence, and it is thought to be transmitted through the air between hosts.
